Poker Room Review...Tropicana 10/08/05

The Tropicana Casino should always be on everyone's short list for a day of poker in that city called Atlantic. It is located on the South Side of the strip and you can actually take Exit 1 off the Atlantic City expressway to avoid city traffic.

I've always liked the Trop and on return to it recently, I was not disappointed. They offer tournaments and a wide variety of cash games. The lowest limits are $2-4 Hold'em, $1-5 Stud. The $1-3 Stud game has vanished. They also play $2-4 Omaha 8/B and higher.

They have a more private room for the high rollers and the poker layout actually has 4 rooms in total, with one room spilling into the Sportsbook. So, that area can get a little noisy.

The dealers are pretty knowledgeable and the wait times are relatively short. You should buy your casino chips ahead of time at the cage. There is no bad beat jackpot.

On the downside, they don't offer any $3-6 Hold'em, just $2-4 and $4-8. Of course there is plenty of No Limit Hold'em and the demand there is heavy. I avoid that NL tsunami games in these establishments.

The trop also has a table food service, and I've used that in the past. They serve food while you play. This is a time-honored California card room custom. I prefer to order the food in the non-peak hours because I get the impression that the waitresses are not to keen on getting a bunch of food for players.

They have an interesting game called "Pink Chip" limit Hold'em. It's a $7.50 / $15.00 limit game and from what I have observed, it's pretty wild !! There's always a line for that one and there's always a massive amount of chips on the table. It's really a game where you can find non-professionals and professionals coming together.

You can get your Cardplayer magazine for free there and if you travel with a significant other, they just opened a massive shopping mall.

Finally, don't forget to get your "poker club" card there. You get .50cents per hour every time it's zapped. If you have a average of over 4 hours per session, you qualify for a "poker room rate" of $89 on the weekends and $69 during the week. I've done that before.

Also, if you're staying there ask for the SOUTH TOWER. Not only does it overlook the ocean, but you are just steps away from the Poker Room entrance.

The Trop is one of my time-honored favorite spots in Atlantic City. So, I'm giving it a "Full House" rating on the scale of poker rooms.

The Chief Disciple.
