I read an article recently in Cardplayer on the benefits of checking the "nuts" on the river. The basic benefit was to induce another person to place a rather larger bet on the river which pays you off handsomely. I like this move...a lot. It works, even though there is some risk of not "value-betting" here for something.
But here's another thing I discovered. When you don't get the big bet and you are forced to "showdown" your hand, and your nut hand is revealed, a funny thing happens. People fear you. They know you are not stupid. They know you have tried to lay a trap, but they walk in fear that you may try that stunt again. Thus, you have a chance to pick up some pots on bluffs and semi-bluffs and you end up being more feared.
Try it sometime and report back.
